OVERCOMING CHALLENGES USING THE POWER OF THE MIND

Every day people make changes in their thinking that turn their lives around for the better.

They make a resolution to do something in order to achieve a personal goal. But then something happens and they go back to their old ways of doing and thinking. Very frustrating and demoralizing for sure. Somehow, there is a disconnect between what you want and what you do. In short, your subconscious is resisting your conscious desire to carry through with what you must do in order to achieve your goal (quit smoking, lose weight, modify drinking, stop nail biting etc).

Well known motivational speaker and therapist Robert Anthony has said “This is why making a decision based on where you are going, not where you are is so critical. The key is to accept where you are without resistance. You accept ‘what is’ without fighting it, but you keep your intention on your desire. This is the secret to manifestation.”

It is vital that the parts of us – our thoughts, feelings and emotions are aligned in relation to our goal. We must be vigilant and ‘catch’ ourselves going back into ‘old’ thinking. We must stop, take a breath and reconnect to the way we want to have our thoughts, feelings and emotions. It can take a bit of practice to bring yourself into the ‘present’. Especially when you are tired, under pressure, in a chaotic situation.

The key is to do this regularly, in the times when you are not ‘in the thick of things’.

A clever idea that some people use is to set a reminder on their phone or smart watch for every hour (or other regular time). Just a quiet ‘ping’ that reminds them to stop, take a moment, take a breath and reconnect with their goal and do a short bit of imagineering around having already achieved said goal. As if you have already achieved the goal – What does it feel like?, What thoughts do you have?, where will you be? Who are you with?. It’s a quick thing and once it is done you get on with the day and give no more conscious thought to it.
